![]() ![]() “I love you.”Īva smiled and pulled back to stare at Beatrice. Soon, they were a giggling, shaking mess, and Beatrice had to hold Ava close to prevent her from falling.īeatrice sighed as they calmed down, cradling the back of Ava’s head and giving her cheek a kiss as she held her close. “Oh, can you imagine Mother Superion comforting crying kids?” Ava giggled back, shaking on Beatrice’s lap. If anyone cries, we’ll just dump Caterina on them! And we have a few more cats for backup!”īeatrice giggled at the mental image of the cafe’s cats being on standby on the sidelines, ready to be assigned to crying kids. “You won’t,” Ava reassured with another laugh, “It’s just a lantern-making class. “Nope, dearest, you’re the lawyer and the once and future judge!” She leaned down and kissed Beatrice on the lips. “Why don’t you be the judge? You’re the artist!”Īva ended up laughing after all. “I’d have to choose, Ava,” Beatrice said out loud in growing horror, “I’d have to disappoint some kids by not choosing them.”Īva raised her eyebrows, trying not to laugh.īeatrice studied Ava’s face, and an idea came to her. “You’re going to have to pick the top three lanterns and hand out the gift cards, remember?”Īva nodded slowly, amusement growing in her eyes. Part of Beatrice was tickled that she was, in some weird way, reaching the pinnacle of her former career after she quit. Her lawyer days were long behind her, but Ava liked some role play every now and then, and this was neither the first nor the last time Ava would address her as such. “Bea, I love you, but you know you’re going to be the judge at the lantern making competition tomorrow, right? You’re going to need to exercise better judgment, Your Honor.”īeatrice’s lips quirked at the familiar term. Beatrice pulled Ava’s face down to kiss her. Besides, Shannon said the baker she invited is going to teach us how to make lotus seed paste mooncake tomorrow, and I know your favorite is the one with red bean paste,” Ava nodded at the plate, “I ate one, so I know it’s decent even if it doesn’t look like much.”īeatrice turned around fully with her chair, and tugged Ava forward until she climbed onto her lap. “Were you practicing?”Īva pouted a little. It was a mini mooncake, slightly misshapen and with blotches of black spots all around it.īeatrice grinned, tugging Ava around so look at her properly. “Now, it looks like you could use a snack!” Ava said, nudging Beatrice to look at the plate that Ava had placed on the table. The RSVPs were decent, though Beatrice was secretly terrified that no one was going to show up. Invites had gone out to all the kids and teenagers who frequented the space for Ava’s art classes and Beatrice’s self-defense classes and book club. What started out as a casual idea during last year’s impromptu Mid-Autumn Festival celebration had turned into an actual event, with mooncake-making and lantern-making classes taking place at both the Cafe and the Cavern before a neighborhood walk with everyone. Indeed, they had managed to rope in not just Shannon and Mary, but also Camila and Lilith to help out at the Cat’s Cradle Cafe and Cavern’s first Mid-Autumn Festival celebration. ![]() Everyone’s around to help out tomorrow, remember? You’re not going to be alone.”īeatrice conceded with a smile, nodding. “And it’ll be fine even if you missed a few things - we’ll just roll with the punches. “Knowing you, they were probably ready two days ago,” Ava said, kissing Beatrice’s temple. We haven’t done an event like this before, I want to make sure everything’s ready.” “I just wanted to check everything one more time. “I know,” Beatrice said, reaching back to give Ava’s hand a quick pat. “I told you to take a break like, fifteen minutes ago.” Something was placed on the desk next to Beatrice, and Beatrice felt Ava’s hands on her shoulders, starting to massage the tension out of them. “Bea?” Ava’s familiar voice appeared from behind her. ![]() Beatrice sighed, and rested her elbows on her desk, rubbing her tired eyes. The words were starting to blur together on the screen. ![]()
